A dolly is a mechanical vehicle with axles and a coupling device that connects a truck to one or more trailers. This allows for multi-trailer combinations like road trains while facilitating the movement of a single trailer without a truck. By creating a coupling point it distributes the payload and enables longer, heavier hauls or allows for improved manoeuvrability of a single trailer in tight spaces.
How dollys help with heavy haulage:
- Connecting multiple trailers: Dollys are unpowered units designed to link trailers together, greatly increasing transport capacity.
- Supporting a semi-trailer: The converter dolly, provides a pivot point and a fifth-wheel coupling to attach a semi-trailer to a truck.
- Distributing load and mass: By having its own axles, the dolly helps distribute the weight of the connected trailer(s) and the load.
- Facilitating manoeuvrability: For smaller, unpowered dollies, the device can be used to move a trailer short distances or around a property without needing the primary towing vehicle.
- Enabling efficient transport: By forming larger combinations, dollies increase transport efficiency and allow for more freight to be moved in a single journey.
The 2R4 Dolly is the lighter version of the 2R8 Dolly and can be coupled to a rows of 8 or widener.
